Upon successful completion of this course, students should have:
You MUST be prepared to dedicate AT LEAST 5-8 working hours a week to this class (excluding the time spent in the classroom). A minimal prerequisite for the successful completion is good understanding of programming concepts. You will be given class accounts on CS Department machines and all assignments will have to be submitted and run there. Please note that a Linux server can be accessed from any PC using a secure connection service, such as SSH (explanation to be provided in class).
All students are required to join the GOOGLE news group csx72.
Official annountements will be posted to the thread admin: important announcements. Students are require to read these thread on a regular basis.
Cs472: Exams: 20 (mid-term) + 30 (end-term); 50 marks for assignment.
Cs572: 50 marks programming assignments; 20 marks presentation; 30 marks written report.
Late marks: 2 marks off per day (weekend = 1 day)
See also, below, for how to lose marks due to poor attendance or lateness.
For special consideration on the above, either:
Students will work in groups of three.
Students can drop out of groups and write essays in place of coding projects (one 2000 word essay per project on a topic set by the lecturer). Such students will automatically lose 6.5 points in their final mark. Once a student drops from a group, they cannot rejoin another group
Also, at the lecturer's discretion, students can be ordered to drop out of groups and write the essays.
Students are expected to regularly attend lectures. After three noted absences, students will lose two points per absence. After three noted lated arrivals, students will lose one point per late arrival. If you have another commitment that requires you to be consistently late, you should drop the class.
In this subject, students will be building software that will be so intricate that the lecturer will be unable to run it without student help. Accordingly, when marking the software, it is required that students be present for one hour debrief sessions where the lecturer will run their code and asking them questions about their system. These are mini-exams which will be run once (only) for each project. Once student schedule a session with the lecturer for these sessions, then this meeting must take precedent over all other meetings. ATTENDENCE AT THISE SESSIONS IS MANDATORY (exception: unless a doctor's certificate can be provided).
Consistent with WVU guidelines, students absent from regularly scheduled examinations because of authorized University activities will have the opportunity to take them at an alternate time. Make-up exams for absences due to any other reason will be at the discretion of the instructor.
